The Caye Caulker Nature Reserve was established in 1989 by a Gift of Land in the south of Caye Caulker from Ozzie Cheek and Dane Dingerson.

The Reserve is managed by the Caye Caulker Conservancy. Through the efforts of the community two successful expansion projects have been undertaken. The Wetlands Environmental Trail has been extended with a right of way to the east donated by Mr. Lilienthal. The Eden Isles Corp. has offered a twenty acre parcel of land to the north and an acre of land for a Nature Center, which will serve also as a hurricane shelter.

The Reserve provides protected habitat for many species of wetland creatures like the iguana and the American Crocodile . Numerous species of birds and small lizards reside here.
